OTJIM allows for simple and advanced search, cross-referencing several data and metadata, including music transcriptions and textual incipits, especially in the case of manuscript and printed sources. Due to fluidity of Hebrew pronunciation amongst Italian Jews (who until recently, for example, were reading the final "tav" as "d", and the letter "ayin" as nasal sound "gn"), similar items might appear under different names and titles. Should the search bring not relevant item, we suggest doing as follows:
- search using a different spelling (i.e., lekhah dodi, lekah dodi, lechah dodi, etc.)
- check the tags where variant readings are listed
- check the Hebrew-Latin character transliteration criteria below
- make your search typing the title or the incipit in Hebrew characters.This is by far the most effective search method, especially if you are looking for a document that is commonplace in Jewish liturgy but whose name is locally spelt very differently (as in the case of "Lekhah dodi" above).
