Notes on music

This melody is quite clearly a variation of the popular one transcribed in Consolo and in use in Rome, Florence and Venice. The connection is already evident in the first half of the melodic structure of each strophe, that in the case of the Consolo melody is a double repetition of a short motif that ascends from the tonic to the fifth and comes back down, and in the present case is instead a similar motif followed by a variation that starts on the fifth to come back down to the tonic; then in the second half of the melody for each strophe the connection is even clearer, and both versions present roughly the same melody, complete with its characteristic raised fourth degree. It is interesting to note that the present melody is recorded as in use for the Italian rite of Torino, as opposed to the Consolo melody which is consistently used by Spagnolo congregations. We are here in a very clear presence of musical "spilling over" from one rite to the other.
