Informant biographical notes

"Giacomino" Farber survived the total annihilation of his family in Gorizia during the Shoah. One of his siblings was David, son-in-law to Benzion Fink, hazan in Gorizia from the early '900s to the 1930s, then hazan in Ferrara. To Bruno Farber, son of David and nephew of Giacomino, deported and killed at three months of age, is dedicated the garden behind the synagogue in Gorizia. After the war Giacomo moved to Milan where he eventually became parnas and help to the rabbi for many years. He died in 2015.

Notes on music

Some confusion appears from sources regarding this and other two versions of lekhah dodi recorded by G. Farber on the same day. In the "Catalogo Sommario" four versions are listed, instead of the three actually recorded; the first two without any specific indication except for Shabbat, the third indicated in use for Shabbat Bereshit, the fourth for Shavuot. On NLI, instead, the first one is indicated in use for Shabbat Nachamu, the second for normal Shabbatot, the third for Shabbat Bereshit. We have numbered them in succession as "Farber 1, 2 and 3" and indicated for each one all of the alternative possible uses; clearly a more detailed study of Levi's notes, other existing sources or testimony might shed some light on the actual usage of the three melodies. It can also be noted (see below) that this specific item, Lekha Dodi Farber 3, is sung by the informant with the same melody as the concluding qadddish before the 'amidah on festival nights.
