Son of Leo Levi, rav Joseph grew up in Israel but exposed since youth to Italian rituals, in particular to the Gorizia minhag often used by his father. He graduated in philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in Psichology at the Sorbonne in Paris, and studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Jerusalem. He was chief rabbi in Florence from 1996 to 2017.
