Notes on composer
Salvatore Saya, Sicily 1856- Rome 1933. Was director of the choir of the Tempio Maggiore (il Coro della Communita’ ebraica di Roma) 1904-1933.
Date of transcription
03/14/1909
Notes on transcription
Date on the full score manuscript of this piece appears to be "1905," but both the National Library of Israel and "Ebrei a Roma tra Risorgimento ed emancipazione (1814-1914)”, ed. C. Procaccia, Gangemi Editore, Roma 2015 confirm that it is actually 1909.
Notes on text
Italian siddurim (see for example V. Castiglioni 1905, סדר תפלת ערבית לשבת ולשלוש רגלים כפי מנהג היטליאני ) confirm the tradition of having a choir introduce and close the homily by the Rabbi at evening services (after Barekhu) with verses from Proverbs that deal with the value of good teachings.
